5 Dos and Don'ts Londoners want you to know

June 25, 2025

No matter where you go, which city or country, the people who live there usually share common rules or social etiquette. For those of you preparing to go to London for the first time, it's important to understand the social rules and etiquette of Londoners. As the saying goes, 'When in Rome, do as the Romans do.'

1. Don't Cut in Line

Londoners place great importance on queuing. Whether it's waiting in line for a new restaurant or waiting to buy small items, it's considered polite to wait for your turn to do things. Londoners don't appreciate queue-jumping, and even if the queue isn't very clear, no one will try to push ahead before asking the person in front.

2. Tipping Isn't Always Necessary

In the UK, tipping isn't as crucial as in some other places. You might tip 10-15% after a meal at a restaurant or for a taxi driver as a kind gesture. However, in some places like pubs, bars, or hotels, tipping bartenders, porters, or housekeepers is unusual and might even get you a strange look.

3. Know the Tube Rules

There's nothing more frustrating than being in a rush to work but getting stuck behind groups of tourists blocking the way, right? So, if you can avoid it, try not to use the Tube during peak hours (7:00-9:00 AM and 5:30-7:30 PM). And always remember to stand on the right when using escalators.

4. Always Be Aware of Your Surroundings

London is a great city to live in, but it's best to always be aware of your surroundings when traveling or sightseeing. In central London locations and subway stations, pickpockets are often looking for victims. Therefore, Londoners recommend keeping your phone and valuables close to your body and not walking around while using your phone.

5. Don't Assume All the Food is Bad

The joke about how bad traditional English food is is outdated. Nowadays, London is full of excellent restaurants with Michelin stars everywhere. However, that doesn't mean you should avoid traditional English food. Trying new flavors might change your mind.

For those of you preparing to travel to London soon, don't forget to use these London social rules and etiquette so you can live as smoothly as a local!
