Watch these series on Netflix to get familiarize with the accent before travelling

May 21, 2025

As we all know, the UK doesn't just have the standard British accent; there are over 40 other completely different and more difficult-to-understand accents. Examples include Scottish, Cockney, and Northern Irish accents. In this article, Peyton & Charmed invite you to rewatch series on Netflix to help your ears become more familiar with these new accents.

1. Derry Girls

We're kicking off with Derry Girls, which received overwhelmingly positive reviews on Google with a score of 4.9 out of 5. The show follows the everyday lives of a group of teenagers in Northern Ireland in the 1990s, with dark humor woven into the Northern Irish accents. It has also won numerous awards, including International Emmy Awards, BAFTA Awards, and many others, guaranteeing the entertainment value of this series.

2. Baby Reindeer

This series is based on the true story of the lead actor who faces a stalker, making him afraid to live his own life. The lead actress, who plays the stalker, uses a Scottish accent throughout the show, even though she was born in Yorkshire. This 7-episode series can be binge-watched in just a few days and received a score of 4.2 out of 5 on Google Reviews.

3. Heartstopper

Another excellent series that received a phenomenal score of 4.9 out of 5 on Google Reviews. The storyline is lighthearted, focusing on love, life, and friendships in an all-boys school. Due to the characters attending a rather privileged school, most of them speak with a British Received Pronunciation (RP) accent, which is considered the standard accent. Therefore, Heartstopper is another great series to listen to in order to help with your learning.

4. Cunk on Earth

This series might not be fiction like the others, but we guarantee it's just as interesting and fun. With content that parodies documentaries while still providing a wealth of information, it received a score of 4.4 out of 5 on Google Reviews. The presenter uses a Bolton accent, which is a common accent found in Lancashire or the northwest of the UK.

In addition to the series that Peyton & Charmed have recommended, there are many other ways to improve your English listening skills. These include listening to podcasts on various platforms or finding UK native speakers to chat with. Exposing yourself to an environment full of English communication will greatly help your listening skills develop much faster.
